The Bowes Museum contains some of the earliest known documented glass by Emile Gallé, the result of a special commission in 1871. This publication explains his origins in the world of botany and china-dealing, and his subsequent role as the prime exponent of the botanical form of Art Nouveau. The appendix contains transcriptions and translations of his letters to Joséphine Bowes, which contain some of his earliest recorded thoughts on art and botany.
